Sensei was very friendly and well-prepared. He understood my needs and provided practices that targeted the areas I wish to improve on. The lesson was fun and engaging. I only wish that I could schedule more frequent lessons as his times are mostly booked.

謝謝老師專業又耐心的教導。The casual chat before the start of reading is happy and helpful for me to learn more about listening and expressing in Japanese. Happy to learn about “could/couldn’t”, “how about”, sentences in more complicated structure, etc. today. Looking forward to the next lesson!

In the first couple of classes (they're 50 minutes each), the teacher will go over the basic 50 sounds, plus the voiced and contracted sounds. It's perfect for beginners, and if you practice on your own, you'll really benefit from it. In the last three classes, the teacher will explain things and guide us through some practice. Oh, and if you'd rather not have the phonetic symbols in the text, just let the teacher know! It can help you understand Japanese characters better and get more comfortable with them!

Its very relaxing to talk to the teacher. I think it will be good to practice my Japanese conversation with her. She is also willing to listen to my preferences and provides some option on how we can do the class.

Had a great lesson. This time I learned a lot about Japanese culture using Marugoto. Teacher explained everything clearly. In Japanese and somethings I still didn't understand she was able to also explain in English. 素晴らしいと思います!

The trial class went super well! Neko-san is really enthusiastic, evaluated my level rapidly and took a lot of time giving me advice on how to overcome bottlenecks I'm facing in my Japanese learning. The most useful thing I gained today is that I should focus on particles when listening to a Japanese speaker!

The teacher is amazing in so many ways. She’s really patient and encourages me to ask questions during class. She breaks down my questions and helps me understand whether my issues are with grammar, tenses, vocabulary, or sentence structure. Plus, she gives us homework to work on after class, and we review it together. I find that really helpful for revising the material!

From the moment we first connected—even before my initial lesson—I felt your genuine enthusiasm for teaching. Your effortless switch to Chinese or English when I’m stuck is a lifesaver, and the abundant speaking opportunities always boost my confidence. I love how relaxed and casual each class feels, yet your time management and structured lessons make every minute count. You tailor materials so well to my needs, whether I’m feeling like a beginner or testing out more advanced concepts. Plus, your meticulous notes and optional homework strike the perfect balance of rigor and flexibility. Thank you for making my Japanese journey so engaging and personal, Riko-san!

Q3. How do I choose my tutor?
If you have a clear idea of your criteria for choosing a tutor - such as any specific learning objectives, target cost for tutoring, etc. - you can use the search function to quickly find a tutor who suits your needs, and select “book trial” to set up your first online lesson.
If you don't have time to find a tutor or aren't sure where to start, we can help with recommendations. Try using our tutor recommendation tool here, which will provide you with tutor matches according to your selected needs.
Q4. What's the right learning environment for me? Should I choose a tutor who is a native speaker?
One of the best ways to learn is to immerse yourself in an environment where you try to use only .
However, if you do not currently have a solid base in spelling and/or vocabulary, we recommend you choose a bilingual tutor who speaks your target language and your native language, as you will likely have a better learning experience during your one-on-one private tutoring.
If you have a good range of vocabulary but lack the opportunity to practice, then we recommend you choose a native tutor.
Q5. Learn in the US - how do I find a local or online tutor?
You're in the right place. We have local tutors serving New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and most other areas nationwide, as well as numerous tutors based internationally.
Q6. How much will my online class cost?
All tutoring fees are set by the tutors themselves, and not by AT. Most of our tutors charge USD$10-30 per hour.
You can also get matched with suitable tutors who fit a specific budget. If the tutor’s fees work for you, you can buy a lesson package from them or start with a “trial lesson.”
Q7. How do I pay for my lessons?
You can pay with PayPal or credit card (American Express, Mastercard, or Visa). For certain international markets (e.g. Taiwan), we also accept local methods of payment, such as payment via ATM or convenience store.
Q8. How many lessons should I purchase?
If you have a short term goal, we recommend you purchase enough lessons that you can take classes consistently within your timeframe. If you need significant improvement to reach your goal, we recommend you an adequate number of lessons, and get into the habit of regular weekly learning! The more you put in, the more you get out of it!
Q9. What if I have more questions?
