Pin-Hsuan Chen, affectionately known as Penny, is a Taiwanese cellist celebrated for her remarkable journey as both a soloist and collaborative artist. Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on November 14, 1994, Penny earned her Bachelor of Music degree at Soochow University in Taipei in 2017. She went on to complete her Master of Music degree at the Mannes School of Music under the tutelage of Ronald Thomas and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Boston University with Professor Michael Reynolds.
Penny’s vibrant career has seen her grace stages across Asia and beyond, performing with the Asian Youth Orchestra alongside renowned artists such as Steven Isserlis. Her participation in the Oscar-winning director Ruby Yang’s film In Search of Perfect Consonance highlighted her commitment to musical excellence. Penny has held prominent roles as principal cellist with the Regina Opera and the Lanyang Symphony Orchestra, where her performances were highly acclaimed. She further enriched her orchestral experience through a prestigious fellowship program with the Montclair Orchestra.
Internationally, Penny's performances have captivated audiences in cities such as New York, Boston, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Her dedication to music extends beyond the stage; with over eight years of teaching experience, she has guided students to success in prestigious competitions, including The Medici International Music Competition, The Prokofiev International Music Competition, the Taiwan Music Competition, the London Young Musician Competition, and the Little Mozart International Competition.
Her achievements in early competitions include a second prize at the 2008 National Musical Competition of Baroque and a first-place finish at the 2010 Taiwan Music Competition, along with a second prize in the 2017 Taiwan National Student Music Competition. Penny’s journey reflects her deep passion for music and her commitment to inspiring future generations of musicians.
