Ian was excellent! He made theory easy to understand and apply, quickly gauged where I was with the Guitar and tailored the class to my needs. We covered the CAGED system and I felt that I now understand the concept much better just from a trial lesson. I'm excited to take more lessons with Ian and would highly recommend him to anyone!

I like the way of memorizing how to play the chords that Ian taught me. It is not only memorizing without thinking, but by understanding the theory which make it much easier.

Really enjoyed learning a bit more about music theory and different chord voicings. Looking forward to practicing my listening skills to determine what key and chord progressions are used in a song.

Anna is a phenomenal teacher. She brings a positive spirit to every lesson. Even when I’m not in a great mood, she lifts me up. Also, I’m not the quickest or best student, but Anna is so patient….probably more patient that I deserve. I’m kind of self conscious about things like taking music lessons, but Anna makes me feel like I’m doing okay. So much so that I’m always looking forward to our next lesson. She’s just a wonderful teacher, who seems to understand the challenges of students like me. I feel very lucky to have found her.

Ian is great. He always has a plan in mind and it really helps maximize the time my son spends with him. Other teachers seem to be all over the place in their lessons. Ian is much more structured, which I think helps my 10 year old focus more since he knows what to expect, not "so what do you want to try this week?" I highly recommend Ian!

The first guitar class with Ian was refreshing, structured and methodical. It piqued my interest in learning more about guitar, an instrument that magically opens the door to the world of music in its own unique way!

Tweens like to think that they have their own opinions about various matters, so I asked my 9 years old to say a few words about his ukulele teacher, Shen, to help other kids' parents make informed decisions. My kid said, "Shen is patient, and he gives clear instructions, which makes him a great teacher!"

We really enjoy working with Shen. He gave my son some great tips on how to practice and we are now trying a Christmas song. Thank you! Unfortunately, we are going to be busy over the holidays so we have to stop for now. Hopefully, my son won't forget everything before we can start again. :)

Hi Teacher Coen ! It was a really insightful lesson ! I just want to say thank you so much ! I was really nervous to take my first guitar lesson, but you calmed my nerves because you were so relaxed. I thought that I was going to be really bad at learning the basics of guitar, but because you are a good teacher I learnt how to play the A and the D note! I also learnt great guitar vocabulary like the differences between pick, picking, strum and many more! Thank you for helping me teacher Coen, I really appreciate your patience with me :)

We discussed the chord progressions in the first verse of my original song. Also Ann showed me the method of seventh chord transformation which is useful for my songwriting.

Q3. How do I choose my tutor?

If you have a clear idea of your criteria for choosing a tutor - such as any specific learning objectives, target cost for tutoring, etc. - you can use the search function to quickly find a tutor who suits your needs, and select “book trial” to set up your first online lesson.

If you don't have time to find a tutor or aren't sure where to start, we can help with recommendations. Try using our tutor recommendation tool here, which will provide you with tutor matches according to your selected needs.
Q4. What's the right learning environment for me? Should I choose a tutor who is a native speaker?

One of the best ways to learn is to immerse yourself in an environment where you try to use only .

However, if you do not currently have a solid base in spelling and/or vocabulary, we recommend you choose a bilingual tutor who speaks your target language and your native language, as you will likely have a better learning experience during your one-on-one private tutoring.

If you have a good range of vocabulary but lack the opportunity to practice, then we recommend you choose a native tutor.
Q5. Learn in the US - how do I find a local or online tutor?

You're in the right place. We have local tutors serving New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and most other areas nationwide, as well as numerous tutors based internationally.
Q6. How much will my online class cost?

All tutoring fees are set by the tutors themselves, and not by AT. Most of our tutors charge USD$10-30 per hour.

You can also get matched with suitable tutors who fit a specific budget. If the tutor’s fees work for you, you can buy a lesson package from them or start with a “trial lesson.”
Q7. How do I pay for my lessons?

You can pay with PayPal or credit card (American Express, Mastercard, or Visa). For certain international markets (e.g. Taiwan), we also accept local methods of payment, such as payment via ATM or convenience store.
Q8. How many lessons should I purchase?

If you have a short term goal, we recommend you purchase enough lessons that you can take classes consistently within your timeframe. If you need significant improvement to reach your goal, we recommend you an adequate number of lessons, and get into the habit of regular weekly learning! The more you put in, the more you get out of it!
