Alex is fantastic! He very efficiently got me talking up to 20 sentences in our first lesson alone. He is receptive to the topics that I want to learn and is direct when I make a wrong sound or tone. We have a good time but focused at the same time. He is worth every penny and I will be taking classes with him for a long time

Ms. Irene is a very professional teacher. As a complete and conherent teaching plan is crucial to language base setting, she always comes to the class fully-prepared, starting with a review followed by target content and ending with some hk culture sharing. Class materials are also uploaded timely. Above all, Ms. Irene is patient and encouraging throughout, which is why I would recommend her to all beginners.

Forest is a wonderful teacher! She is so kind, and it always felt like I was talking to a friend I've known for years. She helps me with easy, every day words that I can use in my daily life, always remembering the reason for wanting to learn and tailoring to my needs. She also balances that with more difficult challenging words. It has been a great investment.

Just finished a 10-lesson course with May. Mei pays a lot of attention to students' pronunciation and always corrects me immediately when I mispronounce some terms, which is great because that's exactly what I need.
In addition, she will give students some homework and spend extra time marking it, of course, you can skip this step if you are too busy, it's up to you. However, the homework thing really allows me to keep learning Cantonese throughout my busy day.
Before each class started, she always asked me if I had time to practice what I learned in the previous class; If not, she would review the content briefly. I could tell she cared about her students and if you are interested in learning Cantonese, I recommend giving it a try.

Very patient and friendly teacher. Apple's class materials were helpful and I had a great trial. I'll be booking some more classes :) I learnt a lot, and had lots of fun. Didn't realise learning cangjie could be so manageable. I like that Apple divided the material into smaller steps. It made it easier to follow. Thanks so much :) 老師非常有耐性,好nice同friendly。我係個trial學咗好多嘢, 會再book more classes 。唔該哂, 下次再見!

It is great having a teacher that can find ways to get my son to somewhat engage from the start, especially as he is difficult to sit still. We were able to discuss way of how to better help him to engage more with the class.

Recently we have started add the things we previously learnt into our conversation, like weather, how is your weekend, what did you do during last week, and culture differences etc.
Eugene explained everything in cantonese to provide an full-cantonese listening environment for me, and let me feel really relax and not afraid to express my thoughts in cantonese (even most of time I couldn't pronounce or choose the vocab properly).

Today I had my first trial class with Anita. I found it to be a very welcoming and nice environment. Anita was assessing my level and trying to customize the lesson for me. I like the material she uses too!
Another strong point about Anita (for those who are ABCs or CBCs) is that she has a strong grasp of English. I think maybe she lived in the UK before? But this is very helpful in our ability to speak to one another. I’ve experienced teachers who struggle with English, making it difficult for me to understand their lessons, and they also have trouble understanding me.
I started my Cantonese journey last year, and I still have a long way to go when it comes to vocabulary, pronounciation and grammar. Anita was very polite in correcting me when I did not pronounce something correctly, or if my grammar was wrong.
Overall, I found Anita's class to be engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson! Thank you, Anita!

I trialed a Cantonese Class with Livi and really enjoyed it. I am a 2nd generation Chinese Canadian and I did not grow up speaking or understanding Cantonese. Livi was really understanding and patient. I enjoyed talking to her! She is in the Western timezone, and I am in the Eastern timezone, so her hours work really well for me. Livi's got a solid handle on English, which is super helpful. I’ve had some mix-ups with previous teachers since their English wasn’t great, and my Cantonese isn’t the best either. I really enjoyed her class and I believe she would be a great Cantonese teacher for all levels!

I am currently on the search for a new Cantonese tutor. Being super eager, I decided to book a same-day trial lesson with Miss Irene. I was impressed she accepted despite only having a few hours notice. Given the limited time to prepare, I didn't expect her to be well-prepared.
When I tried to join the video call, I ran into a series of issues. I ended up having to switch computers, but Miss Irene was very patient. She started the lesson immediately, didn’t judge me for my limited vocabulary, and was kind, complimenting my pronunciation despite me being new to Cantonese. I learned a few new sayings from her that I had never heard of, that was interesting. Time passed quickly, but she offered to personalize future lessons and send me songs for extra practice.
I will note that the Romanisation system she used was something I was unfamiliar with. I know jyutping, but this seemed to be a mixture of jyutping and another Romanization system? That is one thing that was a bit difficult for me.
Miss Irene is a very kind and patient teacher. I think she would be a great resource to learn more about Hong Kong culture as well. Thank you, Miss Irene for taking my last minute class request!

Miss Yeung is a brilliant, experienced and patient teacher to my active, 'ants in his pants', NCS 6 year old.
Miss Yeung promotes 'wanting to learn' through skill and experience. Lessons are calm but enthusiastic and plenty of much needed praise is always on hand for young ones. Today, my son finished his class and immediately showed me the words he has learned and said 'I wants to do it again!'

Q3. How do I choose my tutor?
If you have a clear idea of your criteria for choosing a tutor - such as any specific learning objectives, target cost for tutoring, etc. - you can use the search function to quickly find a tutor who suits your needs, and select “book trial” to set up your first online lesson.
If you don't have time to find a tutor or aren't sure where to start, we can help with recommendations. Try using our tutor recommendation tool here, which will provide you with tutor matches according to your selected needs.
Q4. What's the right learning environment for me? Should I choose a tutor who is a native speaker?
One of the best ways to learn is to immerse yourself in an environment where you try to use only .
However, if you do not currently have a solid base in spelling and/or vocabulary, we recommend you choose a bilingual tutor who speaks your target language and your native language, as you will likely have a better learning experience during your one-on-one private tutoring.
If you have a good range of vocabulary but lack the opportunity to practice, then we recommend you choose a native tutor.
Q5. Learn in the US - how do I find a local or online tutor?
You're in the right place. We have local tutors serving New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and most other areas nationwide, as well as numerous tutors based internationally.
Q6. How much will my online class cost?
All tutoring fees are set by the tutors themselves, and not by AT. Most of our tutors charge USD$10-30 per hour.
You can also get matched with suitable tutors who fit a specific budget. If the tutor’s fees work for you, you can buy a lesson package from them or start with a “trial lesson.”
Q7. How do I pay for my lessons?
You can pay with PayPal or credit card (American Express, Mastercard, or Visa). For certain international markets (e.g. Taiwan), we also accept local methods of payment, such as payment via ATM or convenience store.
Q8. How many lessons should I purchase?
If you have a short term goal, we recommend you purchase enough lessons that you can take classes consistently within your timeframe. If you need significant improvement to reach your goal, we recommend you an adequate number of lessons, and get into the habit of regular weekly learning! The more you put in, the more you get out of it!
Q9. What if I have more questions?
Our FAQs page should have answers to most of your questions. If you can't find the answer to your question on the FAQs page, you can contact us by clicking the red question mark (?) icon at the bottom right of your screen.
